President’s Summary

Friday, January 28th, 2011

NZSIA President, Pete C-B, gives us a summary of how Interski 2011 went for New Zealand…

Last first!

Closing ceremony final 'all-nations' runIt’s over! St Anton’s Interski of 2011 has come to its end, with a display from all the participating nations and then a final mass ski. There were so many people on the demo hill that it looked like dry ice had been deployed to envelope the skiers and riders in a soft white cloud. It was extra cool. Fireworks followed coordinated to music. Wow!!! Impressive is the only way to describe the closing ceremony and the scope of the whole event. Then, of course, the big party for the participants began. NZSIA’s bobble hats and SBINZ’s beanies were in hot demand and much swopping of each country’s insignia took place. The party went on long into the night and, for some hardy souls, the following day too.

Freestyle Demo

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

Interski is drawing pretty close now. In fact, we’ll be there in 5 days.

We’ve just been sent a picture of the kicker that’s been built for the freestyle demo, and it looks good – big, but good! It’s approximately 16 metres on the flat, and there’s a down rail (8 metres) and an a-frame box (6 metres) too.

Update from the Interski Organisors

Winter has arrived in St. Anton am Arlberg!

While preparations for the 2011 INTERSKI Congress are going full steam ahead, the enchanting scene created by the first snowflakes swirling gently from the sky signals the start of another sensational winter season. Last week snow fell in St. Anton am Arlberg, dumping 40 cm (15 inches) of new snow in the elevation of 1,793 meters. For true winter sports enthusiasts, the ski season has already begun (as you can see from that picture).

Early snow in St Anton The very first skiers and snowboarders of the 2010/2011 ski season were greeted with fresh powder and blue, sunny skies, a common occurrence in St. Anton am Arlberg.

Interski 2011 Web site

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

Things seem to be moving along over in Austria. The Interski 2011 Web site is slowly taking shape with more information now available about the event, including some specific workshop and lecture dates, and a PDF of the programme itself – download it here!

Other exciting media aspects the organising team are focusing on includes a Facebook page and ‘Congress TV’ (yet to be seen).

Where is St Anton?

If you’re unfamiliar with the name St Anton am Arlberg (don’t worry, we won’t make fun of you for not knowing one of Europe’s most famous ski resorts), it’s in the heart of the Austrian Alps – check out the map.

The President reports back on Interski

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

In April 2009 NZSIA President Peter Clinton-Baker visited Austria to attend the General Assembly of Interski.

The Interski General Assembly happens every two years. The three organisations that sit under the Interski International umbrella all report at the meeting. These organisations are ISIA, IVSI (representing instructors who work in clubs and associations – volunteers) and IVSS (representing instructors and teachers working in Schools and Universities).

Read this post if you’d like to learn more about how Interski is setup or about the 2009 General Assembly itself. Alternatively, check out Pete’s own account of the event posted in the news section on NZSIA web site.
